{"id":18062,"date":"2016-02-26T13:41:10","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T13:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.impactmania.com\/im\/homeboy-industries-the-tipping-point-for-change\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T16:20:37","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T16:20:37","slug":"homeboy-industries-the-tipping-point-for-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.impactmania.com\/im\/homeboy-industries-the-tipping-point-for-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Homeboy Industries: The Tipping Point for Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><\/h1>\n<div id=\"attachment_921\" style=\"width: 1254px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-921\" class=\"wp-image-921 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.impactmania.com\/im\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_1325-1.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1325\" width=\"1244\" height=\"829\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jose Osuna, Director of External Affairs, and Homeboy Industries founder, Father Gregory Boyle<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Homeboy Industries: The Tipping Point for Change<\/h1>\n<h5>BY MELISSA WALKER<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Leaving the network of a gang and the financial security is not easy, but finding a way to make a more a commonplace lifestyle can be even harder with the burdens of gang markings, a criminal record, and lack of education and employment history.<\/p>\n<p>A Los Angeles nonprofit started by a Jesuit priest, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homeboy Industries<\/a><\/strong> provides this pathway to help former gang members rehabilitate by bringing a positive change to the lives of people of all ages with hope, support and training.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1988, by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/fatherg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Father Gregory Boyle<\/a><\/strong>, previously incarcerated gang members, both men and women, are provided with comprehensive free services and a new life path from the groups headquarters in the gang neutral territory of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinatownla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinatown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to Homeboy Industries a little over seven years ago, and I came for the same reason that brings many people here, I needed help,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jose-osuna-a3085b35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jose Osuna<\/a>, Homeboy Industries Director of External Affairs told <em>impactmania<\/em>. \u201cI was involved in the gang lifestyle for over 25 years of my life. When I finally decided to make a change, I had a friend that was already working here at this organization, and he told me that I should come and talk to Father Greg about a job. I had just got arrested for a drug offense, and it was real difficult for me to get back into the workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changing Lives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Homeboy Industries comprehensive services are designed to provide over 10,000 community clients and trainees with an opportunity to turn their lives around to become more productive members of the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy number one impact maker is so easy to answer \u2013 it\u2019s Father Gregory Boyle,\u201d Osuna exclaimed. \u201cHere\u2019s a man that has loved me unconditionally, extended a hand to me when nobody else would, and didn\u2019t want anything in return for that, simply wanted to see me succeed and be the best Jose that I can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fg6pLs_Sjx0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/case-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Case managers<\/a> help to provide a goal-oriented service plan with employment services providing a weekly series of workshops to break job barriers and find hidden markets \u2013 like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/solar-panel-installation-training-certification-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photovoltaic Training Program<\/a> that covers tuition and supply costs for clients wishing to enter the green industry. And, over 50 classes each week guide clients to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/curriculum-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high school diploma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tattoo removal is also provided to help remove gang markings, and legal services are offered from an on-site lawyer with free consultations and referrals covering immigration law, post-conviction matters, and family law. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mental Health Program<\/a> also offers counseling for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> substance abuse<\/a> and individual psychotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 men and women each year are provided job-training positions at the headquarters, and from a variety of social enterprises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Enterprise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Homeboy Industries vast <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/businesses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social enterprise businesses<\/a> include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/homeboy-silkscreen-embroidery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">silkscreen and embroidery merchandise<\/a>, and evolving food services with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/homeboy-bakery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bakery<\/a> wholesale and storefront, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyfoods.com\/Default.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homeboyfoods.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/homeboy-diner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diner at LA City Hall<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/news-events\/view\/refrigerated-truck-to-help-with-grab-go-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grab-N-Go<\/a> restaurant at LAX Airport, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/catering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catering<\/a>, food truck, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeboyindustries.org\/what-we-do\/homegirl-cafe\/welcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homegirl Caf\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another new program started last year under the vision of Father Boyle and led by Osuna, is the Homeboy Alumni Network of men and women who have gone through the nonprofit\u2019s program, similar to a university alumni group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at about 50 members right now, but we\u2019re currently growing the network,\u201d Osuna said. \u201cThat\u2019s one of our priorities for 2016, to really solidify and strengthen, and expand the Homeboy Alumni Network. It gives us a vehicle for those individuals that have gone through the program and have felt a deep impact \u2013 it gives them an opportunity to give back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The organization is not just about the trainees who are served, but also bringing the whole community together with more affluent volunteers from the Westside of Los Angeles, helping former gang members with GED or math tutoring, and computer training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur yoga instructor is an older white lady that has really been embraced by the homies here,\u201d Osuna said.<\/p>\n<p>Homeboy Industries continues to influence new clients and the community by breaking down the obstacles of stereotypes and color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though we started off on one street corner or another, the gang territories in which we identified with are represented by colors. But, here we wear every color of different t-shirts that are provided to us by Homeboy Industries. Because every color is love,\u201d said James Campa, who came to Homeboy Industries after being released from prison, in July 2015. \u201cIt gives us a measure of trust to break down our former limitations, and we\u2019re able to trust one another in this family enclave that we now support ourselves with.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_920\" style=\"width: 1254px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-920\" class=\"wp-image-920 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.impactmania.com\/im\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_1348.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1348\" width=\"1244\" height=\"829\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James (Jimmy) Campa, Homeboy Industries Trainee and Tour Guide<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere are men here that otherwise, when I was growing up as a teenager, I would look at them as a mortal enemy,\u201d Campa elaborated. \u201cToday I look to them each day and I get warm handshakes and friendships and hugs from these men that are now my brothers. And there\u2019s no greater feeling than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Homeboy Industries and the growing network of clients and enterprises continues to expand and build influence within Los Angeles and worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can shatter the myths about those of us that have been incarcerated, those of us that have been in gangs.
