Students have been co-creating while learning more about the societal challenges we all face. Most importantly, they have received opportunities to connect with researchers in various fields. This is to spark critical thinking that goes beyond a traditional directive learning in a classroom setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, I connected with Giacomo Mastronardi, a student of Messaggero Veneto Scuola and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impactmania<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> internship program. Giacomo is a member of the group that is exploring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hmm.ucsb.edu\/migration\/neurological-responses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain functions of second generation immigrants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Giacomo provided some highlights of their project, who the students interviewed, and some of the research questions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">The students are looking to explore questions such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">In which language and culture do children of immigrants, born and raised in a country different from their parents, tend to identify with?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">What are the differences between today\u2019s and past decades\u2019 immigrant experiences?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">Are there advantages of being a second generation immigrant? If yes, what are some examples?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">Are the experiences of a second generation immigrant in Italy different from the experiences of a second generation immigrant in other countries?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">How does a person\u2019s accent and physical features determine their social discrimination?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">What role does school have in the development of relationships between people with different backgrounds?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\">\u201cSecond generation immigration is a current topic. We always hear about immigrants, but never about the immigrants\u2019 daughters and sons. Parents arrive in another country with already a lifetime of experiences, but their children, teenagers or even younger, don&#8217;t\u201d, Giacomo says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group is interested in different topics; for example, Giacomo and a fellow student of the program, Ludovica Borgatti <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are focusing on the brain&#8217;s reactions to a foreign culture, the use of another language, and the advantages of bilingualism. They interviewed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.francofabbro.it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Franco Fabbro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, neurology professor at the University of Udine. He&#8217;s written books about the bilingualism in the brain and the neuropsychology of language. They also interviewed a woman that lived in Australia for years, but for bureaucratic problems had to return to Italy. They are also planning to interview a daughter of Romanian immigrants who is 16 years old, born in Italy, but visits Romania almost every year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martina Faggiani focuses on social relations between multicultural groups and interviewed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.unitn.it\/du\/en\/Persona\/PER0172144\/Didattica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeroen Vaes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from the University of Trento, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica;\">Furthermore, Marianna Macorig is looking for experts in the neurology field, who are investigating the differences in the cerebral development of second generation migrants due to the fact that they may acquire different skills by living in a dual cultural and linguistic context. She would like to learn how their personalities and their thinking methods are influenced by the fact that they live in a family environment characterized by a different culture and language compared to the ones used with their friends or at school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first group of the internship project \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hmm.ucsb.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Mind and Migration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactmania.com\/im\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impactmania<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Italian students from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/messaggeroveneto.gelocal.it\/speciale\/messaggero-scuola\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Messaggero Veneto Scuola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are collaborating. Their interviews will be published soon. Between Italy and the U.S., they have monthly calls, and more frequently calls and communications in the subgroup that is working on the topic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\">In my opinion, this is a very interesting topic, because, as Giacomo said, \u201cWe don\u2019t hear the voices of daughters and sons of immigrants enough\u201d. I think the most particular aspect is to investigate which language and culture children of immigrants tend to identify with. Gli studenti stanno co-creando e studiando i cambiamenti sociali che tutti noi incontriamo. Cosa pi\u00f9 importante, hanno l\u2019opportunit\u00e0 di connettersi con ricercatori di vari ambiti. Questo per sviluppare il pensiero critico che va oltre l\u2019insegnamento diretto che si riceve solitamente in classe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recentemente, ho contattato Giacomo Mastronardi, uno studente del Messaggero Veneto Scuola e del programma di internship di <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impactmania<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Giacomo \u00e8 un membro del gruppo che sta lavorando sulle<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hmm.ucsb.edu\/migration\/neurological-responses\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funzioni del cervello delle seconde generazioni di migranti<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Giacomo mi ha dato una panoramica sul loro progetto, chi hanno intervistato gli studenti, e alcune domande della loro ricerca.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Stanno cercando di rispondere a domande quali:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">In che lingua e cultura i figli di immigrati, nati e cresciuti in un Paese diverso da quello dei propri genitori, tendono ad identificarsi?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Quali sono le differenze tra le esperienze degli immigrati d\u2019oggi e dei decenni passati?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Ci sono vantaggi ad essere un migrante di seconda generazione? Se si, quali sono alcuni esempi?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Le esperienze di un immigrato di seconda generazione in Italia sono diverse dall\u2019esperienza di un immigrato di seconda generazione in altri Paesi?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">L\u2019 accento e le caratteristiche fisiche di una persona, in che modo determinano la sua discriminazione?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Che ruolo ha la scuola nello sviluppo di relazioni tra persone con background culturali diversi?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cL\u2019immigrazione di seconda generazione \u00e8 un tema attuale. Si sente sempre parlare di migranti, ma mai delle loro figlie e figli. I genitori arrivano in un altro Paese avendo alle spalle gi\u00e0 delle esperienze di tutta una vita, ma i loro figli, che possono essere adolescenti o anche pi\u00f9 piccoli, no\u201d, spiega Giacomo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Il gruppo affronta diversi temi; per esempio, Giacomo ed un\u2019altra studentessa del programma, Ludovica Borgatti si occupano delle reazioni del cervello nell\u2019impatto con una cultura straniera, l\u2019uso di una lingua diversa, e i vantaggi del bilinguismo. Hanno intervistato Franco Fabbro, professore di neurologia presso l\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Udine, il quale ha scritto alcuni libri sul bilinguismo nel cervello e neuropsicologia della lingua. Hanno anche intervistato una donna che ha vissuto per anni in Australia, ma \u00e8 dovuta tornare in Italia per ragioni burocratiche. Stanno anche pianificando un\u2019intervista con la figlia di migranti rumeni di 16 anni, nata in Italia, ma quasi ogni anno visita la Romania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martina Faggiani si concentra sulle relazioni sociali tra gruppi multiculturali e ha intervistato <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.unitn.it\/du\/en\/Persona\/PER0172144\/Didattica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeroen Vaes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dipartimento di Psicologia e Scienza Cognitive dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Trento.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Inoltre, Marianna Macorig sta cercando degli esperti nel campo neurologico che si occupino delle differenze nello sviluppo cerebrale dei migranti di seconda generazione, siccome potrebbero acquisire diverse abilit\u00e0 vivendo in un contesto culturale e linguistico duale. Vorrebbe capire come le loro personalit\u00e0 e i metodi di pensiero sono influenzati dal fatto che vivono in un ambiente familiare caratterizzato da una cultura e lingua diverse rispetto a quelle utilizzate con i loro amici oppure a scuola.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questo \u00e8 il primo gruppo del progetto di internship \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hmm.ucsb.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Mind and Migration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d sul quale studenti di<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactmania.com\/im\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impactmania<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 della California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) e studenti italiani del<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/messaggeroveneto.gelocal.it\/speciale\/messaggero-scuola\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Messaggero Veneto Scuola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stanno collaborando. Le loro interviste saranno presto pubblicate. Tra Italia e Stati Uniti hanno chiamate periodiche, e pi\u00f9 frequentemente hanno chiamate all\u2019interno del sotto-gruppo che sta lavorando a un determinato argomento.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12pt;\">Secondo me, questo \u00e8 un tema molto interessante, perch\u00e9, come ha detto Giacomo, \u201cNon sentiamo abbastanza le voci delle figlie e dei figli dei migranti\u201d. Penso che l\u2019aspetto pi\u00f9 particolare da analizzare sia in quale lingua e cultura i figli di migranti tendono ad identificarsi.
