NanoValbruna: An Opportunity to Communicate Science and Bring it to a Local Level<\/span><\/p>\n

The students from <\/span>Messaggero Veneto Scuola<\/span><\/a> interviewed <\/span>Giulia Grancini<\/span><\/a>, Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry at the <\/span>University of Pavia<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>USERN<\/span><\/a> Ambassador, <\/span>YAE<\/span><\/a> Board Member <\/span>and Scientific director of <\/span>Nanovalbruna<\/span><\/a> festival.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Can you explain in a simple way what your work consists of?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

My work consists of the scientific development of new technologies and materials in order to tackle the global energy challenge. Therefore, it focuses on the scientific research of new generation solar cells. This is the scientific activity I’m involved with most of the time, in addition to the transfer of knowledge that happens through teaching students about the innovations we develop within the photovoltaic world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Would you tell us about the solutions presented at NanoValbruna that involves science in local realities?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

There aren’t actually any particular solutions; the main aim of the NanoValbruna event is to bring science to a local level. This can happen in many ways, such as introducing the children to the subject, or organizing meetings with professors from the <\/span>University of Udine<\/span><\/a> in order to communicate the world of science and nanotechnology to participants. Another more specific and scientifically-oriented way is through the virtual duets (scientific panels), where we reach a more experienced audience. In this way we have a double flow: on one hand, we scientists try to communicate our work to the public, and on the other hand we receive feedback from the audience.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How do you intend to apply the nanotechnologies presented at NanoValbruna in reality and in our region?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The nanotechnologies discussed during NanoValbruna were deliberately chosen from different areas: chemistry, physics, bioengineering, medicine, and others. There is therefore no single answer; many nanotechnologies are being developed with a strong impact on scientific research and applied technologies. For example, for the region of Valbruna we talked a lot about agriculture and deforestation, which can have a real impact. We hope in the near future to give a demonstration of our research in these different fields or to participate in projects with different regions and provinces.<\/span><\/p>\n

What has the participation in the festival represented to you?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Focusing on the work of many internationally renowned scientists, like <\/span>Luca Parmitano<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Professor Ferrari<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Professor Manna<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>Professor Torsi<\/span><\/a>. Finding common points between various research areas is essential for the multidisciplinary nature of science. Another fundamental aspect is the interest of the youth, because the knowledge transfer is really important.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is a change you have made in your life to make a difference?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

One could be trying not to stay in your comfort zone. Leaving your comfort zone certainly makes you uncomfortable. I have done it several times, not without sacrifices, and this has allowed me to do what I like now. It is very important to always raise the bar.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was your course of study?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

First, I studied Engineering at the <\/span>Polytechnic University of Milan<\/span><\/a>. Here I achieved a Ph.D. in Physics, studying the properties originated from the interaction of light with matter, in other words, the ultrafast optics field.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then, I focused on the world of solar energy, a striking example of how light generates electricity and benefits for men. I went to the University of Oxford<\/span><\/a> where I achieved my doctorate, then I returned to Milan and worked for two years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Afterwards, I moved to Switzerland where I stayed for four years; at that time it was the center of new generation solar energy. I eventually decided to move again to Italy, as associate professor in Pavia, where I managed to bring the “know how” I gathered along my whole journey and form my own research team.<\/p>\n

What have been the major difficulties that crossed your path?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning, when you are in a new place, you have to prove you are worthy. For me it was important to show what I could bring to the research group, my knowledge, what I could do, and that these things could make a contribution to advance research at that time. In my opinion, this was the hardest thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which are other ways to introduce people to science in addition to events such as NanoValbruna? What is the role of women?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the experience of NanoValbruna, which is certainly an important event to divulge science, for other events that focus on the work of many scientists (such as conferences and publications), it is necessary to use a simple language. Communication has a fundamental role in making people understand the importance of research and the complex topics covered. Women who are working in these fields are stirring up stereotypes by demonstrating their skills. They are an example for all of us to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is the discriminatory difference between men and women evident in scientific circles, or does it manifest itself in a subtle way?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

I have never personally faced such situations; however, there are still many women whom I know personally who still today have to fight this discrimination. Often women experts, rich in knowledge, are rarely consulted. Through the development of the <\/span>Bracco Foundation<\/span><\/a> and with the support of the European Commission in Italy, there is now an online database [<\/span>100Esperte<\/span><\/a>], that was inaugurated in 2016, which has a hundred names, including mine, and a curriculum of female STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) experts: all sectors that have always been underrepresented by women, but are fundamental for the economic and social development of our country.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pu\u00f2 spiegarci in modo semplice in cosa consiste il suo lavoro?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Il mio lavoro consiste nello sviluppo scientifico di nuove tecnologie e materiali per fare fronte alla sfida energetica globale, quindi si focalizza sulla ricerca scientifica nelle celle solari di nuova generazione. Questa \u00e8 l\u2019attivit\u00e0 scientifica di cui mi occupo nella maggior parte del mio tempo, oltre al trasferimento delle nozioni, attraverso l\u2019insegnamento agli studenti, delle innovazioni che sviluppiamo all\u2019interno del panorama del fotovoltaico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ci parlerebbe delle soluzioni presentate a NanoValbruna per portare la scienza nella realt\u00e0 locali?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In realt\u00e0 non ci sono soluzioni particolari, \u00e8 l\u2019intero evento di NanoValbruna che vuole portare la scienza ad un livello locale, \u00e8 la sua idea fondatrice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Questo poi avviene in diverse vie: facendo approcciare i pi\u00f9 piccoli alla materia, organizzando discussioni con professori dell\u2019<\/span>Universit\u00e0 di Udine<\/span><\/a> per cercare di comunicare alla persone presenti il mondo della scienza e delle nanotecnologie oppure a livello scientificamente pi\u00f9 specifico, nei duets, raggiungendo un’audience pi\u00f9 esperto ed aprendo una duplice via: da un lato noi scienziati che cerchiamo di comunicare ci\u00f2 che facciamo e dall’altro il feedback che riceviamo dall audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Come intende applicare le nanotecnologie presentate nella nostra realt\u00e0 e nel nostro territorio?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Le nanotecnologie che abbiamo discusso a NanoValbruna sono state volutamente pescate da aree diverse: chimica, fisica, bioingegneria, medicina e altre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Non c’\u00e8 quindi una risposta univoca, si stanno sviluppando molte nanotecnologie con forte impatto nella ricerca scientifica e delle tecnologie applicate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Per quanto riguarda il territorio di Valbruna abbiamo parlato molto di agricoltura e deforestazione, e questo pu\u00f2 avere un impatto reale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Si spera in un prossimo futuro di dare una manifestazione delle nostre ricerche in questi campi diversi o partecipare a progetti con regioni e province.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cosa ha rappresentato per lei la partecipazione al festival di NanoValbruna?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Mettere a fuoco il lavoro di tanti scienziati di fama internazionale, come <\/span>Luca Parmitano<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Prof. Ferrari<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Prof. Manna<\/span><\/a> o <\/span>Prof.ssa Torsi<\/span><\/a>. Trovare i punti comuni, i punti di connessione tra le varie aree di ricerca \u00e8 fondamentale per la multidisciplinariet\u00e0 della scienza. Un altro aspetto molto importante \u00e8 stato vedere l\u2019interesse dei giovani, perch\u00e9 \u00e8 molto importante il trasferimento della conoscenza.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Qual \u00e8 un cambiamento che lei ha preso nella sua vita per fare la differenza?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Potrebbe essere cercare di non restare nella propria comfort zone. Uscire dalla propria zona di comfort mette sicuramente a disagio, l\u2019ho fatto pi\u00f9 volte non senza sacrifici e questo mi ha permesso di poter fare adesso quello che mi piace. \u00c8 molto importante alzare sempre l\u2019asticella.<\/span><\/p>\n

Che percorso di studi ha seguito per arrivare dov’\u00e8 ora?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Ho studiato prima ingegneria al <\/span>politecnico di Milano<\/span><\/a>, sempre qui ho fatto il dottorato in fisica studiando quelle che sono le propriet\u00e0 derivanti dall\u2019interazione della luce con la materia: quindi il ramo dell\u2019ottica ultra veloce; da qui la mia passione si \u00e8 rivolta al mondo del solare (esempio lampante di come la luce porta elettricit\u00e0 e di conseguenza benefici per l\u2019uomo), sono stata all\u2019<\/span>universit\u00e0 di Oxford<\/span><\/a> e qui ho conseguito il mio dottorato, poi sono tornata a Milano dove ho lavorato per due anni; in seguito mi sono spostata in Svizzera per quattro anni, la Svizzera all\u2019epoca era il centro di riferimento per l\u2019energia solare di nuova generazione; poi ho deciso di ritornare in Italia, a Pavia come professore dove sono riuscita a portare il<\/span> “know how” che ho raccolto lungo tutto questo\u00a0 percorso e formare il mio gruppo di ricerca.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nel suo percorso quali sono state le difficolt\u00e0 maggiori che ha incontrato?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

All’inizio quando si \u00e8 in un posto nuovo devi dimostrare quello che vali, e per me nei primi momenti era importante questo: far vedere quello che potevo dare al gruppo di ricerca in quel momento, quindi come le mie conoscenze, quello che io sapevo fare potevano dare un contributo per avanzare la mia ricerca in quel momento. Secondo me questa era la cosa pi\u00f9 difficile.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oltre ad organizzare eventi come NanoValbruna, quale \u00e8 un altro passo da compiere per avvicinare le persone alla scienza? E quale \u00e8 il ruolo delle donne in questo specifico compito?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Oltre all’esperienza di NanoValbruna, che sicuramente \u00e8 un evento molto importante per portare fuori la scienza, cos\u00ec come altri eventi che possono mettere a fuoco il lavoro di tanti scienziati (conferenze e pubblicazioni), per poter far comprendere l’importanza della ricerca \u00e8 necessario avere un linguaggio semplice. Per far capire a ogni persona ci\u00f2 che si sta dicendo, la comunicazione svolge un ruolo fondamentale. Le donne che ora lavorano in questo campo stanno sicuramente smuovendo luoghi comuni dimostrando ci\u00f2 che sanno e sono per tutti noi un esempio.<\/span><\/p>\n

Negli ambienti scientifici la differenza discriminatoria tra uomo e donna \u00e8 cos\u00ec evidente oppure si manifesta in modo sottile?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Non mi \u00e8 per ora mai capitato personalmente di affrontare situazioni del genere, tuttavia vi sono ancora molte donne, che io stessa conosco, che ancora oggi devono combattere tale discriminazione. Spesso le donne “esperte”, ricche di conoscenza, vengono interpellate solo raramente. Per questo (attraverso lo sviluppo di <\/span>Fondazione Bracco<\/span><\/a> e con il supporto della Rappresentanza in Italia della Commissione Europea), ora vi \u00e8 una banca dati online [<\/span>100Esperte<\/span><\/a>], inaugurata nel 2016 con 100 nomi (tra cui anche il mio) e curriculum di esperte di STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics): tutti settori da sempre poco rappresentati da donne ma fondamentali per lo sviluppo economico e sociale del nostro paese.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
